PENNY'S BLANKET

The Draw for Penny’s Blanket Raffle took place on Friday, January 27, 2006. The blanket was won by Ms. M. Rogers, of Melbourne, who purchased her ticket at the Penny Crittle Teams Day held by Rena Kaplan and Stephen Lester at the Borin Bridge Centre. The winning ticket was drawn by Penny’s partner, Ross Moore, who came to Canberra especially for this purpose.

The tickets were on sale for nine months, and during that time some people have achieved wonderful results. Without them, the raffle would not have been nearly so successful. These are the people who deserve wholehearted thanks for helping to achieve the $5,000.00 raised for The Cancer Council, NSW.

  • Keith MacDonald, for his help and support from beginning to end
  • Judy Frazier, who excelled at the A.N.C. in Sydney – what an achiever!
  • Kim Ellaway, for her help in Queensland
  • Rena Kaplan and Stephen Lester, who held Penny Crittle Teams Day
  • John Roberts, whose club members knew and loved Penny
  • Rosemary Farr-Jones, who was the first to offer help in selling tickets
  • Prue Siemsgluess, Penny’s sister, who worked wonders in only a few days

Eilis Magner made the beautiful blanket for Penny, who, as we all know, died before the blanket was finished. It was Eilis’ idea to raise funds for cancer research in Penny’s memory. She and her husband, Don Clilverd, worked hard for many months selling tickets in northern New South Wales. They have raised approximately $800.00. In addition, they spent hours preparing the tickets for the draw.

For my part, I would like to thank the following Bridge Clubs for allowing me to sell tickets at their congresses, the clubs who sold tickets themselves and of course, all the people who supported the cause by buying:

  • Mudgee Bridge Club, where the first tickets were sold
  • Moree Bridge Club
  • Trumps, Derrick Browne
  • Lindfield Bridge Club
  • Tamworth Bridge Club
  • Bairnsdale Bridge Club, Victoria
  • Kings and Queens Bridge Club, Ishmael Del'Monte
  • Inverell Bridge Club
  • The A.B.F. Summer Festival

Finally, there is another person to thank, and that is my long-suffering spouse, Des McGlashan, who is one of those rare human beings always prepared to help others. His patience and support, not to mention his physical (and financial) assistance, are legend. It is his generosity that enables me to get involved in projects such as this.
