Hills-Hurley Award nominations in 1999

Croft-Matthews - won 1999 Youth Butler, 2nd 1999 Aust Youth Teams, represented Australia well in the PABF and World Juniors, made Q-F of NOT after memorable Vu-Graph win over the top qualifiers, 3rd for SA in the Interstate Teams. Play Acol, with a lot of agreements. Have been partners for at least 2 years. (This pair won).

Abraham-Johnson - long term partners, came of age with top efforts in the 1999 Interstate Pairs (1st) and Interstate Teams events in Perth. Did OK in Australian Swiss Pairs (20th out of 78). They practice on OKBridge, play a Relay System, have worked on their system and partnership for many years and are finally reaping the rewards.

Ebery-Gold - a long term partnership. Jamie Ebery is over 25, but this year the ABF has restored the under-30 teams, so they have been deemed to be eligible. They are a long established partnership who have worked on their system (Klinger's POWER system). They won a strong Congress event - the 1999 Albury Swiss Pairs - and were instrumental in their team reaching the semi-finals of the Grand National Teams.

The Helman-Klinger Award Nominations for 1999

Mark Abraham - won Aust Interstate Youth Pairs, organised Tas Youth Bridge, organised Tas Youth Team to Perth, offered to help with websites, hopes to establish ANU Bridge Club in 2000, wherever he goes he runs a University Bridge Club and fosters interest in bridge, zealously plays OKBridge almost daily, spearheaded Tasmania to being a contender in the Interstate Youth Teams in a much improved performance.

(Mark won the inaugural Helman Klinger Award).

Paul Brayshaw's commitment to bridge in 1999 has mainly been his representation in the AJT in Kobe and Ft Lauderdale, because his studies have reduced his other opportunities to play. However, despite this, he has acted as Junior Coordinator in Perth since about September and is certainly the main person in Perth at making a difference to Youth Bridge at the moment. Paul won the National Butler in 1997 and 1998 and continued to make the Australian team in 1999.

Christy Bridgland - won 1999 NSW Individual Championship, probably the only youth to win a State Open Title this year and she did so in a strong field in a strong state. Also won at least one teams congress at the NSWBA. 3rd in NSWBA Father's Day Teams. Averaged 68% over 3 sessions in 1999 GC Pairs Consolation. Has been helping Dorothy Jesner at Canberra's Sunday Youth days, is currently teaching bridge at one school and about to expand to another, as Dorothy's valued assistant.

Leigh Gold - member Australian team in PABF, did well in World Juniors playing for Australia, won Interstate Teams representing Vic, =3rd in GNOT, top Youth masterpoint earner in 1999, 8th at 31/10 in McCutcheon Trophy, won 1999 Albury Pairs amongst many congress wins. Is not as involved as some other nominations at fostering younger players.

Hakan Lyngsjo, born 1974: Hakan is an exchange student who has just returned to Sweden. His results at the Perth ANC were notable. He played well in Stage Two of the Butler, only just missing the cut for Stage Three. The following week he was a key player in the Gold-Lyngsjo-Barned triangle which spearheaded the Victorian Youth Team to victory.

Kylie Robb - won 1999 Australian Youth Teams, member Australian team in PABF, did well in World Juniors playing for Australia, won Interstate Teams, =3rd in GNOT, 3rd Gold Coast Pairs Final, ABFYC member, NSWBA Councillor, NSWBA Youth Committee member, has devoted endless time to helping promote youth bridge in 1999, has taught two of her friends to play, 2nd Interstate Youth Teams for NSW, has updated NSW Youth Address list, is currently preparing a Fundraiser for Youth Bridge and was interviewed on TV about bridge this year. In the Daily Bulletins at the Perth ANC, Margaret Bourke wrote up an ethical action by Kylie, where Kylie refused to take advantage of a sleepy accident by Margaret's partner.

Nic Croft - in January he won the Youth Butler then did great things, described elsewhere, in the NOT. In Autumn he organised and played in an Adelaide University Team which came =3rd in an online World Collegiate event, and a Sydney team also did well, partly due to his help. May was the PABF where he and Luke were regarded as the "anchor pair" by the NPC. July was the Perth ANC as SA's anchor pair. August was the World Juniors, where he played in wins over USA (2nd), Taiwan (4th), Norway (6th, but pre-tournament equal favourites) and a max win over Denmark (3rd). Spring was the creation of the new ABF Youth Website, which shows promise. Summer will be a match against NZ, playing for Australia again.
