Chi Wai(Ben) Leung

How did you get started in Bridge? At what age? Who do you learn from?

I started bridge at 15. My high school in Hong Kong got a bridge club which I walked into it without knowing anything prior. During that time, I mainly learned bridge from books, playing after school and phone apps.

What do (did) you do professionally?

I am a scientist in Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and also a full-time PhD student.

Who is your partner and for how long? Longest Partnership?

I don’t have a regular partner at the moment, have been mainly playing with QLD youths and our beloved youth coordinator, or trying to ask good players for a game. My longest bridge partnership was around 2 years.

If you had a choice who would you like to play with? Australia and Internationally – living or dead.

In your playing career, what is the bridge success that has the most meaning for you?

A friend I known for my whole life flew to Australia just to play with me in a national congress, we had a lot of fun and did ok.

And your worst moment in bridge?

I played with a good friend when I first learned bridge. We were really competitive and did really bad in our first big congress. We had a big fight about it. We remained good friends after all these years but he never touches bridge again.

What do you do between sessions to put you in the best frame of mind for the following sessions?

Read a good book, with good coffee and food. Talk to people about anything but bridge.

Do you have a favourite and least favourite convention?

Favourite: Rubens advances ; least favourite : Bergen raises or Gerber

Would you prefer to have more system or less?

System more if regular partnership; system less otherwise especially if I am learning from someone good

What do you to do to improve your game?

Play a lot, bridge books, asking questions/trying to ask for a game from someone good

Favourite bridge book

Who has the Queen by Frank Stewart
