How did you get started in Bridge? At what age? Who did you learn from?
My grandparents looked after me when school finished. Twice a week, Grandma was at the local bridge club and didn’t come home until 4.30pm. When I found out it was a card game, I wanted to learn because I thought that I was pretty good at snap and go fish. She eventually agreed to teach me and, once a month, I was able to leave school in primary school and go have a game at the club.
What do (did) you do professionally?
Bridge, Bridge, Bridge and more bridge. I have a BBuSCom from Monash. I also worked at Reece Plumbing for a year.
Who is your partner and for how long? Longest Partnership?
I started with Stephen Williams and we kept on playing for about 10 years. By then I was in my early 20s. After that I played with Lucy Henbest for a few years. In 2014, I snagged Justin Mill as my youth partner because Pete became too old to qualify as a youth player a year earlier than we did. From then, I wanted to mix it up with different people to learn different styles. I had some success—winning nationals with six different partners.
Currently, I’m not playing that much, but in 2024, Dave Beauchamp and I spiked up a partnership and were unsuccessful in our trials for the Australian Mixed Team. I’d love to play more with Dave, but he’s on the Australian Seniors team—and since I’m captaining that team, I really shouldn’t be tempting him away from practice with his partner, Maurits van der Vlugt.
If you had a choice who would you like to play with? Australia and Internationally – living or dead.
Martina Navratilova (as long as we could go to dinner afterwards).
In your playing career, what is the bridge success that has the most meaning for you?
Finishing 6th in the 2011 VCC. Sebastian Yuen, Stephen Williams, James Higgins and I were a relatively inexperienced youth team and seeded 67th/70. When we played the Noble Team Mike Prescott, George Bilski, Ish Del’monte and Ash Bach were at the table. We came out of that with an amazing -6!
I thought 6th at the VCC was going to be the best result I would ever achieve in bridge. I was so excited I took the next day off work to celebrate.
And your worst moment in bridge?
When I tried to play 4♠ undoubled when I was always planning to run to 5♣ if I was doubled. I thought it was passed out but no, it was doubled! I didn’t realise until the score went in the bridgemate and sure enough, everyone had seen it but me.
What do you do between sessions to put you in the best frame of mind for the following sessions?
Swim if that’s an option.
Do you have a favourite and least favourite convention?
Stayman and Gerber.
Would you prefer to have more system or less?
Depends who I am playing with. No middle ground though, all or none is best.
What do you to do to improve your game?
Not much at the moment (2025)
Favourite bridge book
Card Combinations by Lawrence
What interests or hobbies do you have besides bridge?
I have a 4 and a 6 year old so whatever that takes me. I’ve also just purchased a Cricut (dangerous).
What is the number one thing that bridge has done for you as a person and for your life?
Built great friendships and connections
