Alexis Wilsmore

How did you get started in Bridge? At what age? Who do you learn from?

i got started when i was 8, and learnt from my dad at first

What do (did) you do professionally?

I’m a year 12 student
Who is your partner and for how long? Longest Partnership?

I’m playing with Jess in this event, but my longest partnership is with Jade

If you had a choice who would you like to play with? Australia and Internationally – living or dead.

Uhh I’m really not fussed, I like to play bridge for the fun of it and for the challenge, but I don’t like letting myself get to invested otherwise. I won’t be having fun anymore. So, anyone cheerful and not overly competitive, and maybe who can teach and correct me when I get things wrong 🙂

In your playing career, what is the bridge success that has the most meaning for you?

I’m pretty sure we (Aussie U-21 team) had a win (draw?) last year in Italy, which was pretty cool, but I don’t really like to measure bridge successes like that because it makes me competitive and tense, which isn’t as much fun. “I’ve won if I’ve had fun” is really cheesy and childish, but that really is how I try to approach bridge.

And your worst moment in bridge?

One of my favourite bridge mess ups that I’ve done is on the first board of the first set of the first day of Youth Week, my partner and I both opened 1C at the same time (my fault). I’m sure I’ve done much worse things, but that one was so funny to me at the time so it stuck in my mind.

What do you do between sessions to put you in the best frame of mind for the following sessions?

I’m not sure there’s really anything specific I do between sessions, besides ask for my partner’s opinion where I think I’ve messed up, make a mental note of their answer for the next time, and try not to dwell on it too much.

Do you have a favourite and least favourite convention?

My favourite convention is definitely 3-way 2C lol
I like 2-way checkback as well.
I don’t think I have a least favourite convention, I’m pretty willing to try anything.

Would you prefer to have more system or less?

It depends on how long I have to mess around with it lol. The more bidding I do with someone, the more I have thoughts and ideas, but then if it gets too complicated so I tend to forget lmao.

What do you to do to improve your game?

I’d like to think that every time I play I’m improving my game 🙃

Favourite bridge book?

I’ve got to say Under the Table lol, not just out of familial loyalty. I took a 3 year break from bridge when I moved to France, and that was the one bridge book I took with me. I would read a chapter or a few of it pretty regularly before bed.

What interests or hobbies do you have besides bridge?

I like reading and writing, and I did acting for a long time, but recently had to stop because it was too much along with school. I also do scouts and swimming outside of school, and I tend to start baking when I’m stressed or upset lol.

What is the number one thing that bridge has done for you as a person and for your life?

I’ve met so many cool and really nice people through bridge 🙂
