How did you get started in Bridge? At what age? Who do you learn from?
I started to learn the principles of bridge from my dad when I was about 7, but I started to play in clubs in March 2021 at age 9.
What do (did) you do professionally?
I am a Yr 10 student.
Who is your partner and for how long? Longest Partnership?
My main youth partner is my brother, Oliver (Oli), but in the ANC this year I will be playing with Alec Vanyai. I have been playing with Oli since 2023.
If you had a choice who would you like to play with? Australia and Internationally – living or dead.
I would choose Renee Cooper, because she is the best Australian player that I know and have met. I also like her personality!
In your playing career, what is the bridge success that has the most meaning for you?
The best result I have ever achieved is when I came 1st in the Youth Week consolation event in 2024 with Oli.
And your worst moment in bridge?
When I was playing with Alec in the novice Easter red point session this year, we were 0.05 percent away from winning a prize for 3rd. That would’ve been worth an extra trick in any of the contracts!
What do you do between sessions to put you in the best frame of mind for the following sessions?
I mostly drink a cup of tea, and take deep breaths. I also occasionally play games on my phone to relax.
Do you have a favourite and least favourite convention?
My favourite convention is Bergen Raises. My least favourite is Gerber.
Would you prefer to have more system or less?
More, because it allows me to know more about partner’s hand.
What do you to do to improve your game?
I play a fair few sessions and I also do some practice with my brother at home with my dad.
Favourite bridge book
“Defensive Play at Bridge – a Quizbook” by Barbara Seagram and David Bird. I like this book becaise I like the quiz format. It also has companion books on declarer play and bidding.
What interests or hobbies do you have besides bridge?
I like to do origami, play mahjong and other games, and sing. I have performed with a symphony orchestra and chorus in the past.
What is the number one thing that bridge has done for you as a person and for your life?
It has helped me with my concentration, and has made me many friends!
Bridge results and awards
I’ve won quite a few club sessions and have won a side-event at Youth Week.
