Oliver Brayshaw

How did you get started in Bridge? At what age? Who do you learn from?

I started learning bridge in roughly 2020 and played my first club session in March 2021. I was 8.

What do (did) you do professionally?

I am a year 8 student.

Who is your partner and for how long? Longest Partnership?

For this event, my partner is my sister Lizzy and I have been playing with her since 2023. For the ANC, I am playing with Elijah Guest.

If you had a choice who would you like to play with? Australia and Internationally – living or dead.

I do not really know any names in paticular but I would like to play with someone who is experienced and fun.

In your playing career, what is the bridge success that has the most meaning for you?

Winning the Interstate Scramble at Youth Week in 2026. Also, beating Victoria in a match at the ANC in Brisbane.

And your worst moment in bridge?

‘Going to Brisbane’ at a side event in Youth Week (i.e. going for -4000, not actually flying), playing in a redoubled game.

What do you do between sessions to put you in the best frame of mind for the following sessions?

I like to muck around on NeuralPlayBridge (an app). Keeps me thinking about bridge without it being too serious.

Do you have a favourite and least favourite convention?

I like Optimal Twos (I think they were a WA invention), even though I haven’t played them much. I dislike Gerber, I think it’s literally a waste of space.

Would you prefer to have more system or less?

More.

What do you to do to improve your game?

Bidding practice hands with Lizzy and doing quizzes in books. I’m enjoying the new Sunday evening (afternoon for us!) ABF Youth online thing.

Favourite bridge book

A Second Book of Bridge Problems (Patrick O’Connor).

What interests or hobbies do you have besides bridge?

Volleyball, cricket, table tennis.

What is the number one thing that bridge has done for you as a person and for your life?

I’ve made some friends and had a chance to travel. It has helped me to concentrate more at school, too.

Bridge results and awards

Interstate Scramble 2026 at Youth Week. I’ve won a club session with Lizzy, but no WA titles yet.

National Titles

Youth Interstate Scramble 2026.

State Representation

I first played for Tas/WA Colts in 2023, then for WA Youth 2024, 2025 and this year.

National / International Representation

The under-16s this year is the first time for me 🙂
