I find this an interesting situation to handle. I assume south would raise holding 3+ hearts. Playing support (re)doubles and give North a range of possible values would you tend to redouble or repeat your hearts, and what might pursuade you one way or another? Would a change in vulnerability also impact your choice?

Hi Alan,

In these type of situations, I would pretty much always make a Support XX to show my 3-card spade support regardless of my strength or suit qualities because it is very cheap to do so and I likely will be able to rebid my hearts later. It is only when you get to 3=7=x=x type of shapes with big suit disparities between spades and hearts, will I then consider ignoring the spades and rebid my hearts, though I think I would still be inclined to make a Support XX anyway as it is good information to tell my partner.

The vulnerability has no impact on my choice, as it is about showing my hand to my partner (actually, one exception, if I am say 3=7=x=x with great hearts, I may now jump to 4 to prevent the opponents from finding a potential sacrifice).

Kind regards
Andy
